About the Organization of this Site

While time itself may be linear, our experiences and memories are not. I sometimes wonder if I have an overdeveloped sense of time -- overdeveloped in the sense that I use time to organize my understanding of the world I see around me. In an ambiguous, inherently unstable world, worldviews pass into eclipse, ideologies fall, and assumptions are constantly challenged, as if knowledge itself were a living organism capable of reacting and adapting to change.
As such, everything we do, everything that happens to us can have many unforeseen consequences as change ripples away from us like a stone dropped in a pool of water, to use a rather tired and inadequate metaphor. We may not see those consequences immediately, or they may not even be things that happen to us in our own lives, but the point is that the nature of the world around us is determined by all the relationships contained within it.
In this spirit, I have arranged this site in a non-linear, web-like fashion. The individual pieces, drawn from journals, correspondence, and stories, may center around particular memories, hopes, ideas, images or things, but each piece also links to other relevant pieces (and some link to various people in my life as well) so that each must be considered not in isolation, but rather as part of a larger whole which, due to the limitations of human perceptions, may only be examined one piece at a time. This web also emphasizes the importance of context to our experiences and perceptions. Thus, you should not read these pieces as if they reflect some kind of universal, constant "me," for they are all specific to particular points in my life. We all change, and so over time we see and feel differently, new understandings grow, and old priorities fade. If there is meaning to be found, I feel that it lies somewhere in the ebb and flow of change itself.
